What is a Lasting Power of Attorney?

A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a vital legal document allowing you to designate someone to make decisions on your behalf if you become unable to do so due to illness or incapacity. There are two types: one for Health and Welfare decisions and another for Property and Finance. The person creating the LPA is the donor, and the designated decision-makers are called attorneys, who can be relatives, friends, or professionals.

It’s advisable to appoint individuals you trust, ideally more than one, specifying their authority and whether they act jointly or individually. LPAs ensure your affairs are managed correctly if you become incapacitated, avoiding the need for costly court interventions.
